History of New Center & Milwaukee Junction
🚂 Milwaukee Junction emerged in the 1890s as a major railroad hub, helping transform Detroit into the center of America's automobile industry. It became known as the "Cradle of the Detroit Auto Industry."
🚗 Early automakers, including Henry Ford, built and tested some of the world's first automobiles here. Ford's Piquette Avenue Plant is where the revolutionary Model T was developed in 1908.
🏙️ New Center was developed in the 1920s as a second business district, giving workers convenient access to both Downtown Detroit and nearby factories.
🏢 General Motors headquartered in Cadillac Place from 1923 to 1996, while the iconic Fisher Building became one of Detroit's finest Art Deco landmarks. Both are National Historic Landmarks.
🎵 In 1959, Berry Gordy Jr. founded Motown Records on West Grand Boulevard, launching one of the world's most influential music labels.
🏥 Henry Ford Hospital, opened in 1915, helped establish New Center as one of Detroit's leading medical and employment centers.
