Michelin in Detroit: The Green Guide and the 2027 Restaurant Ratings

Detroit has something new to add to its growing list of national and international recognition: MICHELIN.
But there are actually two different Michelin stories happening in Detroit.
The MICHELIN Green Guide already recognizes Detroit as a travel destination, highlighting the city's architecture, museums, neighborhoods, music, food and cultural attractions.
And now Detroit restaurants are being evaluated for the MICHELIN Guide, with the first restaurant selections and ratings scheduled to be announced in 2027.
For visitors, that means Detroit is about to get a very different kind of international culinary attention.
Detroit's MICHELIN Green Guide
Detroit received its first MICHELIN Green Guide in 2024.
Unlike the MICHELIN Guide that rates restaurants, the Green Guide is a travel guide focused on the overall visitor experience. It looks at attractions, architecture, museums, neighborhoods, culture, history and other things that make a destination worth visiting.
Detroit became the 10th U.S. city to receive a MICHELIN Green Guide.
The guide recognizes Detroit for much more than its automotive history. It highlights the city's architecture, art, music, neighborhoods, riverfront and cultural attractions.
That is important because Detroit is a city that rewards exploration beyond the traditional tourist attractions.
The Detroit Institute of Arts Earned MICHELIN's Highest Rating
One of the biggest honors in Detroit's MICHELIN Green Guide is the three-star rating given to the Detroit Institute of Arts.
MICHELIN's three-star Green Guide designation means an attraction is considered worthy of a special trip.
The DIA is one of Detroit's most important cultural institutions, with an extraordinary collection that includes works by artists from around the world.
For visitors coming to Detroit, the museum is not simply something to visit if you have extra time.
It is a destination in its own right.
What Else Does the MICHELIN Green Guide Recognize?
The Green Guide highlights many of the experiences that make Detroit different from other American cities.
Among the places and experiences recognized are:
• Music and cultural attractions
• The Whitney
The guide reinforces something Detroit locals have known for years: the city is much more than its downtown skyline.
MICHELIN Restaurant Ratings Are Coming to Detroit
The restaurant story is even more exciting.
In 2026, MICHELIN announced that Detroit would be included in the new MICHELIN Guide American Great Lakes.
For the first time, Detroit-area restaurants are eligible to receive official MICHELIN distinctions.
MICHELIN inspectors are already visiting restaurants in the region, evaluating restaurants anonymously.
The inaugural Detroit restaurant selection will be revealed in 2027.
That means Detroit could soon have its first restaurants recognized with MICHELIN Stars, Bib Gourmands and other MICHELIN distinctions.
See Our Recommeded Restaurants. We expect one or more to receive Michelin Stars in 2027:
Fine Dining
What Is a MICHELIN Star?
MICHELIN Stars are awarded for the quality of the food rather than simply the atmosphere or popularity of a restaurant.
There are three levels:
One MICHELIN Star
A very good restaurant in its category.
Two MICHELIN Stars
Excellent cooking that is worth a detour.
Three MICHELIN Stars
Exceptional cuisine that is worth a special journey.
The inspectors look at factors including the quality of ingredients, mastery of cooking techniques, harmony of flavors, the personality of the cuisine and consistency.
The restaurant does not simply get a star because it is expensive or fashionable.
Bib Gourmand: The Michelin Recognition to Watch
Detroit visitors should also pay attention to the Bib Gourmand.
The Bib Gourmand recognizes restaurants that offer very good food at a more moderate price.
For a city like Detroit, this could be particularly interesting.
Some of Detroit's best meals aren't necessarily found in expensive fine-dining restaurants. The city has a long tradition of neighborhood restaurants, casual dining and affordable places serving exceptional food.
The Bib Gourmand could therefore become one of the most useful MICHELIN distinctions for visitors looking for great Detroit food without a huge bill.
What Is a MICHELIN Green Star?
The MICHELIN Green Star is different from the MICHELIN Green Guide.
The Green Star is a restaurant distinction recognizing sustainability.
It can recognize restaurants that demonstrate an outstanding commitment to sustainable gastronomy through practices such as responsible sourcing, seasonal ingredients, waste reduction and other environmental initiatives.
So don't confuse these three terms:
MICHELIN Green Guide = travel and attractions
MICHELIN Star = exceptional restaurant cooking
MICHELIN Green Star = sustainability in restaurants
Bib Gourmand = very good food at a good value
Which Detroit Restaurants Could Receive Michelin Recognition?
Nobody knows yet.
That is part of the fun.
MICHELIN inspectors work anonymously, and the final selections are not announced in advance.
Detroit already has an impressive collection of chef-driven restaurants, neighborhood restaurants and innovative dining experiences that could attract attention.
The eventual 2027 selections could include restaurants that Detroit food lovers already know, as well as places that surprise everyone.
And MICHELIN recognition doesn't necessarily mean that a restaurant will receive a star.
A restaurant could be:
• Selected by MICHELIN
• Recommended by MICHELIN
• Awarded a Bib Gourmand
• Awarded a MICHELIN Star
• Awarded a MICHELIN Green Star
Each designation means something different.
Why Michelin Matters for Detroit
Detroit has spent years developing a reputation as one of America's most interesting food cities.
The arrival of MICHELIN gives that reputation an international audience.
It also puts Detroit into a culinary conversation that has historically included cities such as New York, Chicago and San Francisco.
The timing is particularly interesting because Detroit's restaurant scene has become increasingly diverse.
You can find everything from contemporary fine dining and creative tasting menus to soul food, Middle Eastern cuisine, Mexican food, Italian restaurants, Detroit-style pizza, bakeries, cocktail bars and neighborhood favorites.
MICHELIN inspectors will be looking at all of it.
Detroit's Food Scene Is Bigger Than Fine Dining
One thing I hope visitors understand about the upcoming MICHELIN ratings is that they shouldn't use stars as the only way to judge Detroit's restaurants.
Some of the city's most memorable meals aren't formal fine-dining experiences.
Detroit's food culture is built around neighborhoods.
It is built around family-owned restaurants, immigrant communities, longtime institutions, new chefs and entrepreneurs creating something different.
That's one reason the 2027 MICHELIN selections will be so interesting.
They will provide another perspective on a food scene that Detroit locals have been enjoying for years.
A Local's Take
Detroit didn't need MICHELIN to become a great food city.
But having MICHELIN inspectors in Detroit is a significant moment.
The MICHELIN Green Guide has already recognized Detroit as a destination worth exploring, with the Detroit Institute of Arts earning the guide's highest three-star attraction rating.
Now the focus is turning toward Detroit's restaurants.
The first MICHELIN Guide American Great Lakes restaurant selections for Detroit are expected in 2027.
Until then, Detroiters and visitors can have some fun guessing which restaurants will make the list.
And when the Michelin announcement finally arrives, we'll know which Detroit restaurants earned stars, Bib Gourmands and other MICHELIN distinctions.
Detroit's table is set.
